Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae > Digitaria

Characteristics

Annual, culms 20–120 cm. high, erect or straggling.. Leaf-blades narrowly lanceolate to broadly linear, 2–20 cm. long, 4–10 mm. wide.. Inflorescence of 2–9 subdigitate racemes; racemes 3–20 cm. long, the spikelets in groups of 3–4 on a triquetrous rhachis.. Spikelets elliptic, 2–2.5 mm. long, plump; lower glume a little hyaline cuff ± 0.1 mm. long or absent; upper glume as long as the spikelet, 3–5-nerved, the back covered in soft shaggy purplish verrucose hairs extending very slightly beyond the tip; lower lemma similar to the upper glume, but the central interspaces sometimes glabrous; fruit ellipsoid, slightly gibbous and distinctly keeled on the back, yellowish or light brown at maturity.
More
Inferior lemma as long as the spikelet, ovate with recurved margins, 5-nerved, the central and 2 marginal nerves well developed, 2 subcentral nerves but poorly developed, appressed hairy, hairs scarcely overtopping the spikelet.
Superior glume somewhat shorter than the spikelet, oblong-triangular, 3(5)-nerved, appressed hairy, hairs white to purplish, undulating, with rough, papillose wall.
Leaf laminae 5–10 × 0.4–0.7 cm., linear, flat, glabrous on both surfaces, minutely scaberulous along the prominently crisped margin.
Superior lemma somewhat shorter than the spikelet, ovate, apiculate, pale yellow to pale brown, sometimes purplish tinged.
Inflorescence composed of 2–5 racemes, (4)7–18 cm. long, erect, solitary along a short common axis.
Culms 15–60 cm., erect or ascending, rarely from a creeping base, glabrous, nodes dark, glabrous.
Rhachis triquetrous, scarcely winged, up to 0.5 mm. broad, smooth, with scabrous margins.
Pedicels 3-nate, 0.4–3 mm. long, triangular, scabrous, slightly broadened at the apex.
Inferior glume 0.1–0.2 mm. long, blunt, hyaline.
A loosely caespitose or solitary growing annual.
Spikelets 2.0–2.6 mm. long, ovate, inflated.
Ligule 0.57–1 mm. long, rim-like.
