Characteristics

Densely tufted perennial 500-1100 mm high; cataphylls and fibrous basal sheaths densely covered with silky, woolly hairs; culm nodes sparsely to densely hairy. Leaf blade 60-120 x 2-4 mm; margins scabrous. Inflorescence digitate to subdigitate, of 2-4 racemes 150-200 mm long; rachis triquetrous, broadly winged, scaberulous, margins scabrous; pedicel minutely scabrous to glabrous; spikelets in clusters of (2)3-4(-5). Spikelet 2.8-3.2 mm long; lower glume a small cuff 0.3-0.8 mm long, truncate or bilobed; upper glume 1/2-3/4 as long as spikelet, triangular, 3-nerved, densely adpressed hairy, hairs white or purple; internode absent; lower lemma as long as spikelet, 5-nerved, deeply grooved on either side of midrib, margins inflated, hairs 2-4 mm long forming 2 tufts from the base and fringes on upper half of margins; hairs overtop spikelet for 0.5-1.5 mm; upper lemma shorter than spikelet, basally gibbous, obviously keeled, partially exposed, yellow to pale brown; anthers 1.8-2.2 mm long.
More
Densely tufted perennial, the basal sheaths silky pubescent to tomentose, rarely becoming fibrous; culms 60–130 cm. high, erect.. Leaf-blades 8–30 cm. long, 3–10 mm. wide.. Inflorescence of 2–12 digitate racemes; racemes 10–20 cm. long, the spikelets ternate on a triquetrous winged rhachis.. Spikelets narrowly ovate, 2–3 mm. long; lower glume a truncate hyaline cuff 0.2–0.4 mm. long; upper glume 1/2–3/4 as long as the spikelet, 3-nerved, white villous with smooth straight hairs; lower lemma as long as the spikelet, 5-nerved, depressed and hyaline beside the midnerve, with stiff hairs forming 2 tufts at the base and fringing the upper half of the margin, these extending 1–2 mm. beyond the acuminate tip of the spikelet; fruit gibbously ellipsoid, strongly keeled near the base, rostrate, pallidly grey or brown.
Perennial; up to 1.1 m high; densely tufted. Culms erect. Leaf blades 60-100 x 2-4 mm; cataphylls and basal sheaths densely covered with silky hairs. Flowers: inflorescence digitate; racemes 2-4; digitate; 150-200 mm long; rachis broadly winged; spikelets 2.8-3.2 x 1 mm; in clusters of 2-4(5); upper glume 1/2-3/4 as long as spikelet; upper lemma yellow; grey or pale brown to greenish; lower lemma deeply grooved on either side of midrib; with hairs 2-4 mm long forming 2 tufts at base and fringing upper half of margins.
Perennial, densely tufted, up to 1.1 m high. Leaf blades 60-100 mm long, 2-4 mm wide. Cataphylls and basal sheaths densely covered with silky hairs. Spikelets 2.8-3.2 mm long, 1 mm wide. Racemes 2-4, digitate, 150-200 mm long; spikelets in clusters of 2-4(-5); upper glume half to three-quarters as long as spikelet; lower lemma depressed and hyaline beside midnerve, with hairs 2-4 mm long forming 2 tufts at base and fringing upper half of margin.
Inferior lemma as long as the spikelet, oblong with recurved margins, centrally deeply sulcate, margins inflated, 5-nerved, the central and 2 marginal nerves well developed, hairs in two basal bundles, basally swollen, smooth, acute, hyaline to purplish, also part of the margins with this type of hairs, although somewhat more slender, overtopping the spikelet for c. 0.5–1 mm.
Leaf laminae 6–9 × 0.2–0.4 cm., linear, flat, scaberulous and loosely hairy on the superior surface, mostly densely hairy on the inferior surface, scabrous on the margins.
Superior lemma somewhat shorter than the spikelet, oblong, acuminate, basally gibbous and rather sharply keeled, pale yellow to very pale brown.
Superior glume c. 2/3–4/5 of the spikelet, narrowly triangular, 3-nerved, appressed hairy, hairs white to purplish, smooth and acute.
Pedicels 3–4-nate, 0.5–3.5 mm. long, subterete to subtriangular, minutely scaberulous, asymmetrically broadened at the apex.
A tightly caespitose perennial, base surrounded by more or less woolly cataphylls and dark fibrous leaf sheath remnants.
Rhachis triquetrous, broadly winged and up to 1 mm. wide, scaberulous, with scabrous margins.
Inferior glume up to 0.8 mm. long, subcircular to truncate or slightly bilobed, hyaline.
Inflorescence composed of (2) 3 racemes, erect, dispersed along a short common axis.
Leaf sheaths minutely scaberulous, loosely to densely hairy, sometimes glabrous.
Spikelets 2.9–3.2 mm., oblong, basally adaxially gibbous.
Culms 60–120 cm., erect, glabrous, nodes dark and hairy.
Ligule 0.5–1 mm. long, rim-like, shortly ciliate.
