Digitaria compressa Stapf

Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae > Digitaria

Characteristics

Densely tufted perennial, the basal sheaths becoming fibrous and tomentose; culms 50–120 cm. high, erect.. Leaf-blades flat, 15–30 cm. long, 2–7 mm. wide.. Inflorescence of 6–15 racemes arranged on a short axis 2–8 cm. long; racemes 5–15 cm. long, the spikelets ternate on a triquetrous rhachis.. Spikelets narrowly elliptic 2.3–2.8 mm. long; lower glume a little membranous cuff or sometimes reduced to an obscure rim; upper glume 1/3–4/5 as long as the spikelet, 3-nerved, pubescent to pilose (very rarely glabrous), acute or rarely obtuse; lower lemma as long as the spikelet, 7-nerved, pubescent to pilose, usually glabrous beside midrib, very rarely glabrous all over, the hairs fine and flexuous with rounded or minutely globular tips; fruit ellipsoid, light to chestnut brown.
More
Leaf laminae 5–20 × 0.2–0.7 cm., linear, flat or somewhat involute, scaberulous on the superior surface and hairy near the ligule, scaberulous and loosely hairy on the inferior surface, scabrous on the margins.
Superior glume 1/3–2/3(4/5) of the spikelet, ovate, (1)3-nerved, hyaline, glabrous or appressed hairy, hairs hyaline-white, slightly undulating, apex obpyriform or broadened and obtuse.
Inferior lemma as long as the spikelet, oblong-lanceolate, with recurved margins, 7-nerved, nerves equidistant, hyaline, glabrous or appressed hairy.
Inflorescence composed of (5)6–13 racemes, 5–18 cm. long, sometimes branched, erect, solitary along a short, robust common axis.
Culms 40–100 cm., erect, glabrous to sparsely hairy, nodes (pale or) dark, glabrous to upwards hairy.
Rhachis triquetrous, scarcely winged, up to 0.4 mm. broad, smooth with scabrous margins.
Pedicels (2)3-nate, 0.5–4.5 mm. long, subtriangular, scabrous, broadened at the apex.
A tightly caespitose perennial, base surrounded by fibrous, old leaf sheath remnants.
Superior lemma as long as the spikelet, oblong-lanceolate, acuminate, dark brown.
Inferior glume short, truncate, nerveless, hyaline.
Ligule c. 0.5 mm. long, rim-like, shortly ciliate.
Spikelets 2.6–3.5 mm. long, oblong-lanceolate.
