Characteristics

Tufted perennial 400-650(-1000) mm high; rhizome branched, creeping; base with cataphylls. Leaf blade 50-130 x 2-4 mm. Inflorescence of 2 or 3 racemes, rarely solitary, (80)100-180(-240) mm long; rachis triquetrous, narrowly winged, glabrous, margins scabrous; pedicel scaberulous near apex; spikelets in clusters of 3 or more. Spikelet 2.3-3.0 mm long; lower glume a minute truncate scale; upper glume about 1/2 as long as spikelet, 3-nerved, glabrous or hairy, hairs clavate-tipped; internode absent; lower lemma as long as spikelet, 7-nerved, glabrous or sparsely hairy with pallid hairs; upper lemma as long as spikelet, dark, purplish-brown or black; anthers 1.4-1.6 mm long.
More
Perennial, rhizomatous or tufted, up to 0.65 m high. Rhizomes creeping, branched, with cataphylls. Leaf blades 50-130 mm long, 2-4 mm wide. Spikelets 2.3-3.0 mm long, 1 mm wide. Racemes usually in pairs or threes, rarely solitary, 100-180(-240) mm long; female-fertile (upper) floret purplish brown or black.
Leaf laminae 5–10 × 0.2–0.4 cm., linear, flat, superior surface glabrous or loosely hairy near the ligule, inferior surface glabrous, sometimes scaberulous, smooth on the margins.
Inferior lemma as long as the spikelet, oblonglanceolate with recurved margins, 7-nerved, the central and two pseudomarginal nerves well developed, glabrous or very loosely hairy.
Superior glume c. 1/2 of the spikelet, oblong-triangular, 3–5-nerved, glabrous or very loosely hairy, hairs white, capitate-apiculate.
Pedicels 3-nate, 0.5–2.5 mm. long, subtriangular, scaberulous near the broadened apex, bearing a poorly developed coronula.
Inflorescence composed of 1–2(3) racemes, (8)10–20 cm. long, erect, solitary along a short common axis.
Rhachis triquetrous, narrowly winged, up to 0.3 mm. broad, smooth with scabrous margins.
Superior lemma as long as the spikelet, oblong-lanceolate, acute, dark brown.
Inferior glume very short, ovate, truncate, nerveless, hyaline.
Culms 40–60 cm., erect, glabrous, nodes dark, glabrous.
A rhizomatous perennial, base surrounded by cataphylls.
Ligule c. 0.5 mm. long, truncate, shortly ciliate.
Spikelets 2.5–3.0 mm. long, oblong-lanceolate.
Leaf sheaths glabrous.
