Digitaria flaccida Stapf

Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae > Digitaria

Characteristics

Densely tufted perennial, the base fibrous and tomentose; culms 30–100 cm. high, erect.. Leaf-blades narrow, 5–30 cm. long, 1–3 mm. wide.. Inflorescence loose or contracted, of 5–30 delicate racemes arranged on a central axis 10–30 cm. long, not whorled; racemes up to 5–10 cm. long, with a flexuous filiform rhachis naked for the lower 1/3–1/2 its length and bearing paired spikelets above (sometimes the larger branches bearing short secondary racemes); pedicels pubescent at the tip.. Spikelets narrowly elliptic, 2.5–4 mm. long; lower glume absent, or just discernible as a tiny hyaline rim; upper glume 1/2–2/3 as long as the spikelet, 3-nerved, bulging slightly downwards beside the pedicel-tip, appressed pubescent between the nerves or silky pilose all over, long ciliate on the margins with stiff silky purplish hairs; lower lemma as long as the spikelet, 5-nerved, with stiff silky purplish hairs on and between 1st and 2nd lateral nerves (often glabrous near the base), these becoming longer upwards and typically forming a long tuft at about the middle of the lemma, thereafter the nerves glabrous or pubescent but the margins becoming ciliate; fruit ellipsoid, pallid.
More
Densely tufted perennial, 250-400(-600) mm high; knotty rhizomes present; base densely long-hairy. Leaf blade 40-100 x 1.5-3.0 mm; ligule an unfringed membrane. Inflorescence panicle-like, with 6-17 racemes; rachis triquetrous, glabrous; pedicel apex with long hairs not exceeding spikelet; spikelets abaxial, paired. Spikelets 1-3 x 1 mm, dorsiventrally compressed; lower glume a minute membranous cuff; upper glume shorter to as long as spikelet, 3-nerved, silky purplish hairs between nerves; internode absent. Florets 2; lower floret sterile, lemma lanceolate, as long as spikelet, silky purplish hairy on and between nerves, hairs up to 2 mm long, forming tufts at ± middle; upper floret bisexual, lemma ± as long as spikelet, entire, pallid, margins flat and covering most of palea. Flowering time Nov.-Jan.
Densely tufted perennial 250-400(-600) mm high; rhizome short, knotty; basal sheaths densely adpressed long hairy. Leaf blade 40-100 x 1.5-3.0 mm. Inflorescence panicle-like with 6-17 racemes; raceme 30-55 mm long; rachis triquetrous, glabrous; pedicel apex with long hairs not exceeding spikelet; spikelets paired. Spikelet 1-3 x 1 mm; lower glume a minute membranous cuff; upper glume shorter to as long as spikelet, 3-nerved, silky purplish hairs between nerves; internode absent; lower lemma as long as spikelet, silky purplish hairy on and between nerves below, two hairy tufts occur at about middle, these hairs cover the glabrous, except for margins, upper part of the lemma, hairs thick, straight, up to 2 mm long; upper lemma pallid; anthers 1.8-2.0 mm long.
Perennial, densely tufted and rhizomatous, up to 400 mm tall. Rhizomes knotty, with hairy cataphylls. Leaf blades 40-100 mm long, 1.5-3.0 mm wide. Spikelets 1-3 mm long, 1 mm wide. Inflorescence panicle-like with 6-17 racemes, 30-55 mm long; spikelets paired; upper glume and lower lemma covered with silky purplish hairs up to 2 mm long.
