Characteristics

Densely tufted perennial, 220-410 mm high; without rhizomes; base with cataphylls and light-coloured leaf sheaths. Leaf blade 40-130 x 2-4 mm; ligule an unfringed membrane. Inflorescence subdigitate, on a short central axis, 3-6 racemes; rachis triquetrous, narrowly winged, glabrous with scaberulous margins; pedicels scabrous; spikelets abaxial, in groups of 3. Spikelets 1-2 mm long, glabrous, sometimes hairy, dorsiventrally compressed; lower glume a small scale 0.2-0.3 mm long; upper glume up to 0.7 mm long, shorter to as long as spikelet, 3-nerved, pubescent or rarely glabrous, hairs club-shaped; internode absent. Florets 2; lower floret sterile, lemma lanceolate, as long as spikelet, 7-nerved, pubescent or rarely glabrous, hairs club-shaped; upper floret bisexual, lemma ± as long as spikelet, purplish to dark brown or black, exposed, margins flat and covering most of palea. Flowering time Nov.-May.
More
Densely tufted perennial 220-410 mm high; without rhizomes; basal leaf sheaths light coloured, cataphylls present. Leaf blade (20)40-130 x 2-4 mm. Inflorescence subdigitate on a short central axis, of 3-8 racemes 50-90 mm long; rachis triquetrous, narrowly winged, glabrous, margins scaberulous; pedicel scabrous; spikelets in groups of 3(4). Spikelet 1.0-2.2 mm long, glabrous or sparsely hairy; lower glume a small scale 0.2-0.3 mm long or absent; upper glume 1/4-/2 as long as spikelet, 1-3-nerved, hairy or glabrous, hairs club-shaped; internode absent; lower lemma shorter to as long as spikelet, 3-7-nerved, hairy or glabrous, hairs club-shaped; upper lemma as long as spikelet, purplish to dark brown or black, exposed; anthers 0.8-1.0 mm long.
Tufted perennial, the base fibrous and tomentose; culms 25–100 cm. high.. Leaf-blades 5–30 cm. long, 2–5 mm. wide, usually ± villous.. Inflorescence of 4–10 racemes arranged on a short axis 1–4 cm. long; racemes 4–10 cm. long, the spikelets ternate on a triquetrous rhachis.. Spikelets elliptic, 1.8–2.2 mm. long; lower glume an obscure hyaline rim (rarely up to 0.3 mm. long); upper glume a little membranous scale 0.3–0.6 mm. long, 0–3-nerved, ± pubescent with clavate hairs, broadly obtuse to emarginate; lower lemma 3/4 to almost as long as the spikelet, 3–5-nerved, margins and often also the back pubescent with clavate hairs, rarely glabrous; fruit ellipsoid, dark brown.
Perennial, tufted, up to 410 mm tall. No rhizome. Leaf blades 40-130 mm long, 2-4 mm wide. Spikelets 1-2 mm long, 0.8-1.0 mm wide. Racemes 3-6, 50-80 mm long, subdigitate on a short central axis; spikelets in groups of 3, glabrous or with a few hairs; female-fertile (upper) floret purplish brown or black.
Leaf laminae 5–15 × 0.2–0.4 cm., linear, flat or involute, densely papillose and loosely-hairy on the superior surface, scaberulous and loosely to densely hairy on the inferior, smooth to scaberulous along the margins.
Superior glume c. 1/4–1/3 of the spikelet, ovate, (0)1–3-nerved, glabrous or with a few short, thick hairs, broadened and rounded at the apex.
Inferior lemma somewhat shorter than to as long as the spikelet, 3–5(7)-nerved, oblong, hyaline, glabrous or with a few scattered hairs.
Pedicels 3-nate, 0.2–3 mm. long, subterete to subtriangular, scabrous, broadened at the apex, which bears no coronula.
Inflorescence composed of 3–8 racemes, 4–9 cm. long, paired or solitary along a short common axis.
Rhachis triquetrous, narrowly winged, up to 0.4 mm. broad, smooth with scabrous margins.
A tightly caespitose perennial, base surrounded by cataphylls and leaf sheath remnants.
Superior lemma as long as the spikelet, oblong, apiculate, dark red brown.
Culms 20–60 cm., erect, glabrous, nodes dark and glabrous.
Leaf sheaths scaberulous and sometimes loosely hairy.
Ligule 0.5 mm. long, truncate, shortly ciliate.
Inferior glume absent or obsolete, rim-like.
Spikelets 1.8–2.2 mm. long, oblong.
