Superior lemma as long as the spikelet, oblong-lanceolate, acute to slightly acuminate, pale yellow, often purplish tinged.
Leaf laminae 4–15 × 0.2–0.7 mm. long, linear, flat, scabrous and glabrous on both surfaces, scabrous along the margins.
Superior glume 1/5–1/3(1/2) of the spikelet, ovate to triangular, often bifid, 0(3)-nerved, scabrous.
Rhachis triquetrous, winged, up to 0.5 mm. broad, smooth to scaberulous, scabrous at the margins.
Pedicels 2-nate, 0.2–1.5 mm. long, triangular, scabrous, somewhat broadened at the apex.
A caespitose perennial on a very short rhizome, base surrounded by cataphylls.
Culms 70–110 cm., erect or ascending, glabrous, nodes dark and glabrous.
Ligule up to 3 mm. long, triangular or truncate, shortly ciliate.
Inferior glume very short, ovate to triangular, often truncate.
Spikelets 1.9–2.5 mm. long, oblong-lanceolate.
Leaf sheaths scabrous, glabrous.
