Delicate annual; culms 10–20 cm. high, slender, erect.. Leaf-blades involute, 2–6 cm. long, 1 mm. wide.. Inflorescence a solitary raceme 2–4 cm. long, the spikelets paired on a winged rhachis ± 0.5 mm. wide with triquetrous midrib and ciliate margins; pedicels pubescent.. Spikelets elliptic, 2–2.5 mm. long; lower glume an obscure rim or suppressed; upper glume 1/2–2/3 as long as the spikelet, 3-nerved, pilose, gibbous at the base; lower lemma as long as the spikelet, 5-nerved, deeply sulcate along the midnerve, densely pilose with stiff spreading dark brown bristles extending 1–1.5 mm. beyond the tip of the spikelet; fruit ellipsoid, dark brown, distinctly gibbous and keeled at the base.
