Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae > Digitaria

Characteristics

Loosely to densely tufted, rhizomatous perennial, 0.6-1.5 m high; rhizomes knotty; culm lower nodes dark, glabrous; basal sheaths sometimes persistent and rusty brown. Leaf blade 80-250 x 2-6 mm; ligule an unfringed membrane. Inflorescence digitate, of 4-12 racemes; rachis triquetrous, winged, scaberulous; pedicels triangular, scaberulous; spikelets abaxial, paired. Spikelets 2.8-3.5 mm long, dorsiventrally compressed; lower glume ovate triangular; upper glume shorter than spikelet, partly exposing upper lemma, 3-nerved; internode absent. Florets 2; lower floret sterile, lemma lanceolate, as long as spikelet, 7-nerved, nerves scaberulous or sometimes nearly smooth, hairy, bristle hairs sometimes present; upper floret bisexual, lemma ± as long as spikelet, slightly shorter than spikelet, pale yellow to pale brown, margins flat and covering most of palea; anther 1.6-1.8 mm long. Flowering time Dec.-June.
More
Loosely to densely tufted perennial 600-1500 mm high; rhizomes short, knotty; basal sheaths sometimes persistent, rusty brown; culm nodes dark, glabrous. Leaf blade 80-250 x 2-6 mm; ligule membranous, 3-12 mm long. Inflorescence digitate, of 4-13 racemes 100-200 mm long; rachis triquetrous, winged, scaberulous; pedicel triangular, scaberulous; spikelets paired. Spikelet 2.8-3.5(4.2) mm long, hairy; lower glume minute, ovate to triangular; upper glume shorter than spikelet, 3-nerved; internode absent; lower lemma as long as spikelet, 7-nerved, nerves scaberulous or sometimes nearly smooth, hairy, bristle hairs sometimes present; upper lemma slightly shorter than spikelet, partly exposed, pale yellow to pale brown or purplish; anthers 1.6-1.8 mm long.
Perennial; up to 1.5 m high; loosely to densely tufted with knotty rhizomes; base not fibrous. Culms lower nodes straight and covered by bright; rusty brown sheaths. Leaf blades 80-250 x 2-6 mm; ligule membranous; 3.5-12.0 mm long. Flowers: inflorescence digitate; racemes 4-12; digitate; 100-200 mm long; spikelets 2.8-3.5 x 0.8 mm; spikelet characters as in D. eriantha.
Perennial, loosely to densely tufted and rhizomatous, up to 1.5 m high. Rhizomes knotty. Leaf blades 80-250 mm long, 2-6 mm wide; ligule membranous, 3.5-2.0 mm long. Culm lower nodes straight and covered by bright, reddish, brown sheaths. Spikelets 2.8-3.5 mm long, 0.8 mm wide. Racemes 4-12, digitate, 100-200 mm long.
A tightly caespitose perennial, growing on a short, robust rhizome, base surrounded by conspicuously rusty-brown, persistent leaf sheaths, sometimes also by a few densely hairy cataphylls.
Inflorescence composed of 5–13 racemes, 15–20 cm. long, erect, in 2 inferior whorls of 3–5 racemes, sometimes a few racemes solitary, and a terminal whorl of 3–5 racemes.
Inferior lemma as long as the spikelet, oblong, 7-nerved, nerves and interspaces scabrous or scaberulous, appressed hairy, sometimes with bristle-hairs.
Superior lemma somewhat shorter than the spikelet, oblong, slightly acuminate, pale yellow to pale brown, sometimes purplish tinged.
Pedicels 2-nate, 0.5–3.5 mm. long, triangular, scabrous, somewhat asymmetrically and slightly broadened at the apex.
Inferior glume up to 1 mm., ovate to triangular, sometimes ciliate (exceptionally up to 2 mm., 3-nerved and hairy).
Superior glume c. 2/3 of the spikelet, oblong triangular, 3-nerved, appressed hairy, hairs fine, smooth, acute.
Rhachis triquetrous, winged, up to 0.8 mm. broad, loosely to densely scabrous, with scabrous margins.
Leaf laminae 10–40– 0.3–0.7 cm., linear, flat, scaberulous and glabrous on both surfaces.
Ligule 3–12 mm. long, oblong triangular, sometimes truncate and loosely hairy.
Like D. eriantha but lower leaf sheaths rusty brown, ligule longer than 4 mm.
Culm 70–160 cm., erect to ascending, glabrous, nodes dark and glabrous.
Spikelets 2.8–04.2 mm. long, oblong.
Leaf sheaths scaberulous.
