Inflorescence conspicuously linear, composed of (5) 10–20 racemes, 1–3 cm. long (the terminal one often much longer, up to 10 cm., and well developed), appressed, solitary along a well developed common axis.

Leaf laminae 10–30 × 0.3–0.7 cm., linear, flat or sometimes involute, papillose to scabrous on the superior surface, densely hairy on the inferior surface, scabrous and hairy along the margin.
Superior glume c. 2/3 of the spikelet, oblong triangular, 3(5)nerved, hyaline, appressed hairy, hairs long, slightly undulating, red brown, apex obpyriform.
A tightly caespitose perennial, base surrounded by often densely hairy, pale greyish leaf sheath remnants.
Inferior lemma as long as the spikelet, oblong with recurved margins, 7-nerved, hyaline, appressed hairy.
Pedicels 2–3nate, 1–8 mm. long, terete to subtriangular, scabrous, broadened at the apex.
Rhachis triaquetrous, not winged, c. 0.3 mm. broad, smooth with scabrous margins.
Superior lemma as long as the spikelet, oblong, acute, dark brown.
Culm 60–120 cm., erect, glabrous, nodes dark, (sub)glabrous.
Leaf sheaths glabrous to loosely hairy, scaberulous.
Inferior glume short, ovate, nerveless, hyaline.
Ligule c. 1 mm. long, truncate, ciliate.
Spikelets 3.5–4.3 mm. long, oblong.
