Digitaria poggeana Mez

Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae > Digitaria

Characteristics

Annual; culms 50–150 cm. high, erect.. Leaf-blades broadly linear, 4–25 cm. long, 4–8 mm. wide.. Inflorescence loose or contracted, of 40–100 delicate racemes arranged on a central axis 15–35 cm. long, the branches often clustered but not obviously whorled; racemes up to 3–10 cm. long, with a flexuous filiform rhachis naked for the lower 1/3–1/2 its length and bearing paired spikelets above; pedicels pubescent at the tip.. Spikelets narrowly elliptic, 1.7–2.7 mm. long; lower glume absent; upper glume 1/2–3/4 as long as the spikelet, 3-nerved, prolonged downwards into a short spur 0.1–0.3 mm. long, stiffly ciliate; lower lemma as long as the spikelet, 5-nerved, stiffly ciliate with purplish hairs on the margins and as transverse tufts below the middle; fruit ellipsoid, pallid.
More
Inflorescence composed of 20–100 racemes, 1–4 cm. long, erect to patent, 4–10 lowermost ones in a pseudowhorl, the other racemes solitary along a tall common axis, all racemes conspicuously peduncled.
Rhachis at the base subterete and with long white hairs, in the distal half triquetrous, narrowly winged, up to 0.3 mm. broad, glabrous, smooth with conspicuously scabrous margins.
Superior glume 2/3–3/4 of the spikelet, oblong triangular, 3-nerved, appressed hairy, hairs long, stiff, acute, dark purplish, basal spur acute, 0.2–0.4 mm. long.
Inferior lemma as long as the spikelet, narrowly rhomboidal, with recurved margins, 5-nerved, appressed hairy, hairs slightly overtopping the spikelet.
Pedicels solitary or more rarely 2-nate, 0.5–1 mm. long, subtriangular, long ciliate, asymmetrically broadened at the apex.
Leaf laminae 5–20 × 0.3–0.8 cm., linear, flat, glabrous and smooth on both surfaces, scabrous along the margin.
Superior lemma somewhat shorter than the spikelet, narrowly rhomboidal, acute, pale yellow to pale brown.
Spikelets 2.5–2.9 mm. long (without the spur), narrowly rhomboidal.
Culms 40–120 cm., erect, glabrous, nodes dark and glabrous.
A loosely caespitose or solitary growing, slender annual.
Ligule up to 0.5 mm. long, rim-like, minutely ciliolate.
Leaf sheaths glabrous.
Inferior glume absent.
