Perennial; rhizomatous and stoloniferous, or tufted (densely), 300-500 mm tall. Rhizome knotty. Leaf blades 50-130 mm long, 2.5-5.0 mm wide. Culms with lower nodes unbranched, middle and upper nodes profusely branched and forming leafy tufts. Racemes 2-6, digitate, 30-80 mm long.
Inferior lemma as long as the spikelet, oblong-lanceolate, with recurved margins, 7-nerved, nerves about equidistant, appressed hairy.
Superior glume c. 2/3 of the spikelet, triangular, 3-nerved, hyaline, appressed hairy, hairs fine, white.
Leaf lamina 4–10 × 0.2–0.4 cm., linear, flat, smooth and glabrous, with scaberulous margins.
Inferior leaves with reduced lamina, soon withering; median and superior leaves crowded.
Pedicels 2-nate, 0.5–2 mm. long, triangular, scaberulous, slightly widened at the top.
Superior lemma as long as the spikelet, oblong-lanceolate, acuminate, pale brown.
