Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae > Digitaria

Characteristics

Annual; culms 10–60 cm. high, geniculately ascending.. Leaf-blades 2–16 cm. long, 2–4 mm. wide.. Inflorescence of 2–7 digitate or subdigitate racemes; racemes 2–11 cm. long with the spikelets paired on a triquetrous rhachis.. Spikelets narrowly lanceolate, 6–12 mm. long (excluding internode); lower glume a tiny hyaline truncate scale, separated from the upper by a slender internode 0.7–2 mm. long; upper glume as long as the spikelet, 7-nerved, glabrous, gradually acuminate to a filiform tip; lower lemma 3–4.5 mm. long, 7-nerved, appressed pubescent in stripes (hairs fine with curled tips), finely acute; fruit narrowly ellipsoid, acuminate.
More
Superior glume 7–8(12) mm. long, lanceolate-linear, 7-nerved, the central and submarginal nerves well developed, pale green, appressed hairy, hairs fine, with an irregularly recurved apex.
Inferior glume 0.25–0.75 mm. long, truncate, rarely oblong triangular, nerveless, hyaline, separated from the other scales by a narrow stipe, 1–3 mm. long.
Pedicels 2-nate, 0.5–2.5 mm. long, subterete to triangular, ciliate, not broadened at the apex, which can bear a poorly developed coronula.
Inflorescence composed of (1)2–5 racemes, 5–15 cm. long, mostly in one whorl, sometimes in two whorls, separated by a short common axis.
Leaf laminae 3–8 × 0.2–0.4 cm., linear, flat, subglabrous and scaberulous on both surfaces, scaberulous along the crisped margin.
Culms (5)10–40(50) cm., decumbent or creeping at the base, glabrous, nodes dark and loosely to densely hairy.
Superior lemma c. 3 mm. long, lanceolate, acuminate, pale yellow to greenish or bluish purple.
Rhachis triquetrous, narrowly winged, up to 0.5 mm. broad, smooth with scabrous margins.
Inferior lemma c. 4 mm. long, lanceolate, 5-nerved, appressed hairy, pale green.
Leaf sheaths subglabrous to partly densely hairy, scaberulous.
Ligule 1–2 mm. long, subtruncate, entire.
A loosely caespitose or creeping annual.
Spikelets 8–11(15) mm. long, linear.
