Digitaria setifolia Stapf

Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae > Digitaria

Characteristics

Densely tufted perennial, 200-500 mm high; old leaf sheaths break up into brown fibres at base; culm nodes glabrous to villous. Leaf blade 50-140 x 1.5-3.0 mm, usually rolled; ligule an unfringed membrane. Inflorescence subdigitate on a short central axis, of (2)3 or 4(5) racemes; rachis triquetrous, scarcely winged or not, glabrous to slightly scaberulous; pedicels triangular, scaberulous; spikelets abaxial, in pairs or threes. Spikelets 3-4 mm long, dorsiventrally compressed; lower glume short 0.3-0.5 mm long, truncate; upper glume shorter to almost equalling spikelet, 3-nerved, pubescent, hairs sometimes clavate; internode absent. Florets 2; lower floret sterile, lemma lanceolate, as long as spikelet, 7-nerved, with conspicuous rows of bright brown, clavate hairs; upper floret bisexual, lemma ± as long as spikelet, light to dark brown, margins flat and covering most of palea. Flowering time Sept.-Jan.

Densely tufted perennial 200-500 mm high; old leaf sheaths break up into brown fibres at base, often burnt; culm nodes glabrous to hairy. Leaf blade 50-150 x 1.5-3.0 mm, usually rolled. Inflorescence subdigitate on a short central axis, of 2-4(-5) racemes, 40-200 mm long; rachis triquetrous, not to scarcely winged, glabrous to slightly scaberulous; pedicel triangular, scaberulous; spikelets in pairs or threes. Spikelet 3-4 mm, densely hairy, hairs often capitate, lower glume short 0.3-0.5 mm long, truncate; upper glume shorter to almost equalling spikelet, 3-nerved, pubescent, hairs sometimes capitate; internode absent; lower lemma as long as spikelet, 7-nerved, conspicuous rows of bright brown, capitate hairs present; upper lemma as long as spikelet, light to dark brown; anthers 1.3-1.6 mm long.
Perennial; up to 0.5 m high; densely tufted; base fibrous. Leaf blades 50-140 x 1.5-3.0 mm; usually rolled; old leaf sheaths breaking up into brown fibres at base. Flowers: inflorescence subdigitate on a short central axis; racemes (2)3 or 4(5); 40-120 mm long; spikelets 3-4 x 1 mm; with pin-headed hairs (may be inconspicuous); spikelets in groups of 2 or 3; pedicel apex with or without stiff hairs; but if present; not overtopping the spikelet; upper glume and lower lemma with conspicuous rows of bright brown; clavate hairs; upper female-fertile floret dark brown.
Perennial, densely tufted, up to 500 mm tall. Leaf blades 50-140 mm long, 1.5-3.0 mm wide, usually rolled, old leaf sheaths breaking up into brown fibres at base. Spikelets 3-4 mm long, 1 mm wide. Racemes 40-120 mm long, (2)3 or 4(5), subdigitate on a short central axis; spikelets in pairs or threes; upper glume and lower lemma with conspicuous rows of bright brown, clavate hairs; female-fertile (upper) floret dark brown.
Leaf laminae 5–15 × 0.2–0.3 cm., linear, involute, densely papillose to scaberulous on the superior surface, smooth on the inferior surface, scabrous along the margin.
Superior glume 2/3–4/5 of the spikelet, oblong triangular, 3-nerved, appressed hairy, hairs fine, slightly undulating, often capitellate, reddish brown.
A densely caespitose perennial, base surrounded by glabrous, fibrous, often partly burnt, pale to dark brown, shining leaf sheath remnants.
Inflorescence composed of 2–3(5) racemes, up to 20 cm. long, solitary along a short common axis, often branched at the base.
Superior lemma as long as the spikelet, oblong acute to slightly acuminate, mostly very dark brown.
Rhachis triquetrous, up to 0.4 mm. broad, smooth to slightly scaberulous, with scabrous margins.
Pedicels 2–3-nate, 1–4 mm. long, triquetrous, scabrous, broadened at the apex.
Inferior glume very short to short, truncate, nerveless, glabrous, hyaline.
Inferior lemma as long as the spikelet, oblong, 7-nerved, appressed hairy.
Culms 20–50 cm., erect, glabrous, nodes dark and subglabrous to bearded.
Ligule c. 0.5 mm. long, truncate, ciliolate.
Leaf sheaths glabrous to loosely hairy.
Spikelets (3.0)3.2–3.8 mm., oblong.
