Slender annual; culms 8–40 cm. high, erect or ascending.. Leaf-blades 5–15 cm. long, 1–2 mm. wide.. Inflorescence of 2–3 racemes arranged on a common axis 1–5 cm. long; racemes 1–7 cm. long, the spikelets in clusters of 3–5 on a triquetrous rhachis; pedicels with a corona of stiff hairs up to 1 mm. long at the tip.. Spikelets elliptic, ± 2.5 mm. long; lower glume absent; upper glume 1/6–1/3 as long as the spikelet, ovate, 3-nerved, pilose; lower lemma as long as the spikelet, 5-nerved, pubescent, the apex of the hairs clavellate with a pointed tip; fruit dorsally flattened, dark brown.
