Rhizomatous, tufted perennial, 150-600 mm high. Leaf blade filiform, thread-like, usually < 3 mm wide (unrolled), bluish green, mostly basal, base not rounded, apex acute; ligule an unfringed membrane. Inflorescence of paired racemes; internodes and pedicels linear; spikelets paired: one sessile, the other pedicelled. Sessile spikelet 6-8 mm long, dorsiventrally compressed; lower glume with a deep, median, longitudinal groove, apex obtuse, 2-keeled; upper glume boat-shaped, awn 1.3-1.5 mm long. Florets 2; lower floret sterile, hairy; upper floret bisexual (except at base of raceme), glabrous, lemma 2-lobed, awn 75-110 mm long; callus 1-5 mm long, acute to pungent. Pedicellate spikelet 9-20 mm long; lower glume flat or rounded on back, acutely 2-keeled, keels narrowly winged, mucro 1-2 mm long; upper glume apex finely acuminate. Flowering time Oct.-Apr.
Perennial; up to 0.6 m high; rhizomatous and tufted. Leaf blades 100-500 mm long; filiform or up to 4 mm wide (unrolled); thread-like; bluish green; base straight. Flowers: inflorescence digitate with 2 racemes; sessile spikelets 6-8 mm long; pedicellate spikelets much longer; callus hairy along entire callus.
Sessile spikelet 6.5–9 mm long, with long silvery-white appressed hairs at the base; inferior glume with a deep median groove; lemma with an awn 7.5–11 cm long; anthers 4–6.5 mm long, straw-coloured.
Perennial, rhizomatous and tufted, up to 0.6 m high. Leaf blades 100-500 mm long, filiform or up to 3.5 mm wide, thread-like, bluish green. Spikelets (sessile) 6-8 mm long (pedicellate much longer).
Leaf sheaths glabrous; ligule a minutely fringed rim 1–1.5 mm long; laminas 8–26 cm × 2.5–4 mm, inrolled, glabrous or with very short scattered hairs, tapering to a very fine point at the apex.
Pedicelled spikelet male, 14–20 mm long; inferior glume winged on the keels, purplish-green, coriaceous, acuminate at the apex and with a mucro 1–2 mm long.
Racemes in pairs, 7.5–9 cm long, robust, clearly exserted from the spatheoles; internodes and pedicels with silvery-white hairs.
Caespitose perennial; culms 60–160 cm high, often glaucous.
