Characteristics

Sessile spikelet 4.3–5.5 mm long, very pointed and with long appressed hairs at the base; inferior glume c. 4 mm long; lemma with awn 3.5–4.5 cm long; anthers 1–1.5 mm long.

Pedicelled spikelet sterile, 5.5–6.5 mm long; inferior glume narrowly lanceolate-acuminate with narrow wings on the keels, purplish-green, with a mucro c. 1.5 mm long.
Leaves glabrous; ligule a minutely fimbriate rim 0.5–1 mm long; laminas 7.5–13 cm × 1–2 mm, inrolled, tapering to a fine point at the apex.
Racemes in pairs, occasionally solitary, 4–5 cm long; internodes and pedicels with short, dense, silvery-white hairs, clavate.
Caespitose annual; culms 30–45 cm high, tinged with red.
