Characteristics

Annual with culms 10–40 cm high; nodes glabrous. Leaves: ligule a membrane, 0.5–0.8 mm long, margin glabrous or lacerate; blade narrowly lanceolate, 1–4 cm long, 1–1.5 mm wide, puberlous, pilose, sometimes glabrous. Inflorescences digitate, with axis 2–10 mm long; racemes 2, 2.5–5 cm long; raceme internodes 2–3 mm long, with scabrous-ciliate margins or glabrous. Spikelets linear-elliptic to lanceolate, laterally compressed, conduplicate and keeled, 4.5–5.5 mm long, c. 1 mm deep; lower glume with sides rounded or convex (although overall spikelet narrower than deep), shorter than upper glume, scabrous-ciliate along midvein, glabrous or pilose or scabrid on sides, mucronate at apex, thick and leathery on each side of midvein; upper glume spinulose-scabrous along keel at apex, occasional long hairs present on keel wing and margins, keel with developed wing at apex tapers to mucro up to 1.5 mm long, chartaceous; lower lemma linear, 2–3 mm long, hyaline, apex acute, ciliate, awnless; upper lemma boat-shaped, 3–3.5 mm long, hyaline, bifid to 2-lobed, with awn 10–16 mm long.
