Characteristics

Perennials, tufted. Culms erect, herbaceous but slender, almost wiry; flowering culms 20–100 cm high. Leaves: basal sheaths glabrous or pilose; ligule hairless, 1–3 mm long, lacerate; blade flat (involute when dry), 3–24 cm long, 1.5–4 mm wide. Panicles open, 15–60 cm long, 15–30 cm wide; branches alternate or whorled, 6.5–20 cm long, longer or slightly shorter than rachis, divaricate to reflexed. Spikelets abutting to well separated, laterally compressed or subterete, 3–5 mm long, with 3–6 florets (2–5 fertile). Glumes unequal in length; lower glume narrowly ovate, 1–1.2 mm long; upper glume 1.8–2.1 mm long, acute, muticous or aristulate. Basal lemma narrowly oblong, (1–) 1.6–2.4 (–3) mm long, notched, muticous or aristulate, carinate, pubescent, with appressed hairs between the lateral nerves (close to the midnerve) and on the submargins. Palea ±obtuse. Caryopsis not compressed, not evenly thin, obtusely trigonous in T.S.
