Leaves spirally arranged; lamina oblanceolate to obovate, rarely linear, (1)3–14 x (0.5)1.6 cm., chartaceous when dry, apex acute to obtuse, base obtuse to subcordate or cuneate, margin repand to faintly or sometimes coarsely dentate, both surfaces smooth, or sometimes scabrous, inferior surface puberulous to hirtellous on the main veins; lateral veins 3–8(10) pairs; petiole 2–13 mm. long, 0.5–1.5 mm. thick; stipules subulate, 4–10 mm. long and persistent, or stipules triangular c. 0.1 mm. long and caducous.
Receptacle zygomorphic to almost actinomorphic, naviculate to broadly funnel-shaped and orbicular in outline, flowering face elliptic or subcircular, 0.5–2.2 x 0.4–1 cm., plane, often dark purplish, margin 0.1–1.5 mm. wide, often with a ridge, bordering the flowering face; appendages 10–35, lateral, triangular to linear, (0.2)1–17 mm. long, sometimes with terminal, linear appendages to 45 mm. long.
Herb up to 50 cm. tall, rhizomatous; stems ascending, unbranched, leafy in the upper part, 1.5–4 mm. thick, whitish-sometimes yellowish-puberulous or hirtellous, the lower part woody.
Inflorescences solitary; peduncle 0.6–2.7 cm. long, gradually passing into the receptacle.
Endocarp body tetrahedral in shape, c. 2.5 mm. in diam., two sides tuberculate.
Staminate flowers rather spaced; perianth lobes 2–3; stamens 2–3.
Pistillate flowers up to c. 10; perianth tubular; stigmas 2.
