Herb up to 50 cm. tall, rhizomatous; rhizome with brownish filiform branched roots up to 0.5 mm. thick, as well as with yellowish fleshy unbranched roots up to ± 2.5 mm. thick; stems procumbent or ascending, unbranched, ± 2.5 mm. thick, puberulous to hirtellous.. Leaves in spirals; lamina subcoriaceous to chartaceous when dry, elliptic to oblong, oblanceolate or linear, (3–)6–11 × 1–2.5 cm., apex acute, base cuneate to subobtuse; margin repand to dentate; upper surface scabrous, often with paler spots along the midrib and lateral veins, lower surface puberulous to hispidulous, often with purplish spots along the midrib and lateral veins; lateral veins 4–7 pairs; petiole 0.7–1.2 cm. long, 1–2 mm. thick; stipules narrowly triangular, ± 1 mm. long, persistent..
