Herb 10–50 cm. tall, rhizomatous; rhizomes ± woody; stems ascending, sometimes branched, 1–3 mm. thick, puberulous.. Leaves in spirals; lamina chartaceous when dry, obovate to oblanceolate, sometimes ovate, oblong or linear, (1–)3–19 × (0.4–)1–6 cm., apex acute to subobtuse, base obtuse to cuneate, margin repand to sinuate, pinnatifid to-lobed, with 2–8 lobes at each side, coarsely dentate or irregularly pinnately incised; upper surface glabrous and smooth or scabridulous, lower surface puberulous mainly on the veins; lateral veins 2–8 pairs; petiole 0.2–0.9 cm. long, ± 1 mm. thick; stipules subulate, 1.5–5 mm. long, persistent.. Inflorescences solitary or in pairs; peduncle 1–3.5 cm. long, ± 0.5 mm. thick.. Receptacle slightly funnel-shaped, 0.3–1 cm. in diameter; flowering face subcircular, 0.2–0.7 cm. in diameter, plane, margin 0.3–2(–3) mm. wide; appendages in 1 row, 15–28, linear or triangular, 0.2–4 mm. long (2 or 3 slightly longer than the others)..
