Herb up to 100 cm. tall, rhizomatous; stems erect or ascending, branched (at least abortive branches present), 2–10 mm. thick, sparsely and minutely puberulous, the hairs mostly in longitudinal lines.. Leaves in spirals; lamina papyraceous when dry, oblong to subobovate, less often lanceolate to elliptic, (1.5–)3–18(–24) × (0.3–)0.8–6 cm., apex acute to obtuse, base attenuate to cuneate, margin coarsely (dentate-)crenate to lobate or subentire; upper surface minutely puberulous on the midrib or also near the margin, lower surface glabrous or almost so; lateral veins 3–12 pairs; petiole 0.5–2.5 cm. long, ± 1–2 mm. thick; stipules triangular to ovate, up to 1 mm. long, persistent.. Inflorescences solitary; peduncle 1–2.4 cm. long, ± 1 mm. thick.. Receptacle discoid and face subcircular, 0.8–1.5 cm. in diameter; flowering face subcircular to slightly lobed, 0.7–1.4 cm. in diameter, margin up to 1 mm. wide; appendages basically in 2 rows, but at anthesis hardly distinguishable, the inner (marginal) row a few very short, the outer (submarginal) row ± 10–15, triangular to band-shaped or subspathulate, 0.5–10 mm. long.. Staminate flowers ± spaced; perianth-lobes 3(–4); stamens 3–4.. Pistillate flowers numerous; perianth shortly tubular; stigmas 2.. Endocarp-body tetrahedral, ±1.5 mm. in diameter, tuberculate.
