Characteristics

Culms 23–500 cm high. Young shoots extravaginal. Leaves scattered along culms; ligule 6–18 (–20) mm long; blade 10.5–55 cm long, 5–24 mm wide, tapering to a hard sharp point. Inflorescences 12–56 cm long, to 50 cm wide. Spikelets broadly elliptic, 5–9 (–12) mm long; pedicel slender; rachilla shortly elongated between upper glume and first floret and elongated between all florets, terminating at a rudimentary floret. Glumes: lower glume 3–6.8 mm long; upper glume 4.3–8.1 mm long. Basal lemma 4.7–7.2 mm long, with apex hyaline; median awn 0.5–2 mm long; nerves generally prominent, with lateral nerves not extending to apex. Anthers 2.5–4 mm long. Ovary oblong or turbinate.
