Characteristics

Annual. Leaf-blades linear; ligule represented by a line of hairs. Inflorescence composed of racemes borne upon a common axis; rhachis triquetrous, bearing single spikelets, their lower glume adaxial. Spikelets obovate-elliptic, obtuse; lower glume 3/4 the length of the spikelet; upper glume with prominent cross-veins, resembling a woven fabric; lower floret sterile, its lemma resembling the upper glume; upper floret crustaceous, shorter than the spikelet, stipitate, the stipe at first S-shaped but straightening at maturity to extrude the floret; upper palea obtuse, only its margins clasped by the lemma, its tip tucked in. Caryopsis elliptic, dorsally compressed.
