Spikelets ovate-elliptic, 3–4 mm. long, scaberulous to spinulose, the basal callus produced into a globular wrinkled stipe 0.3–0.6 mm. long; lower floret barren, acute; upper lemma 3–4 mm. long, rostrate, its palea obtuse and reflexed.
