Characteristics

Plants rhizomatous, loosely caespitose. Culms erect or basally geniculately ascending, 50–120 cm high, 4–8-noded. Leaves: basal sheath margins free or connate towards base; blade 4–21 cm long, 2–5 (–8) mm wide. Panicles nodding, 1–8 cm long. Spikelets shortly pedicellate, linear or lanceolate, (4.5–) 5–7 (–10) mm long. Glumes about equalling or slightly longer than floret, narrowly lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, (4–) 5–7.5 (–10) mm long, acuminate to subulate-attenuate, often shortly aristate; margins ciliolate-scaberulous mainly towards apex, smooth near base; keel scabrous with hairs to 0.5 mm long. Callus hairs to 1 mm long, silky. Lemma narrowly lanceolate, (4–) 5–7 (–9) mm long, subulate, bifid with aristulate lobes 1–2 mm long, awned, 5-nerved; nerves scaberulous; intercostal regions glabrous or scaberulous (to puberulous) towards apex; awn mostly 5–20 mm long, subapical, inserted 1–1.5 (–2.5) mm below apex. Palea narrowly lanceolate, obtuse, with nerves puberulous. Anthers 0.6–1 (–2.5) mm long. Ovary shortly hispid or glabrous. Caryopsis obloid.
