Characteristics

Plants rhizomatous. Culms erect or basally geniculate, to 70 cm high, 2–4-noded. Leaves: basal sheath margins connate in lower 1/8 or only near base; blade to 18 cm long, to 3 (–4) mm wide. Panicles erect, 1.5–3.5 cm long. Spikelets shortly pedicellate, oblong, 3.5–4 mm long. Glumes exceeding floret, 3.5–4 mm long, narrowly oblong to narrowly ovate or lanceolate, acute; margins ciliolate to ciliate; keel hispid to hirsute-ciliate, with rigid hairs to 0.7 mm long. Callus shortly bearded; hairs to c. 0.5 mm long. Lemma narrowly oblong to narrowly ovate, 2.8–3 mm long, acute, bidentate or occasionally entire, apiculate or mucronate (mucro rigid, c. 0.2–1.5 mm long, scaberulous), 5–7-nerved, scaberulous to minutely hairly along keel and margins towards apex, otherwise glabrous. Palea almost equal to lemma, with nerves glabrous or ciliolate towards apex. Anthers 0.5–1 mm long. Ovary glabrous. Styles 2, apical, free to base. Caryopsis with adherent pericarp, ellipsoid-obloid or lanceoloid.
