Characteristics

Annuals. Flowering culms 9–40 cm high. Leaves: basal sheaths glabrous; blade 0.2–0.5 mm wide, sparsely pilose or glabrous. Inflorescences: rachis glabrous; branches 1–4.5 cm long, far apart in the lower part, appressed uniformly to axis to spreading. Spikelets spreading, close together to far apart, linear or lanceolate, with l:w greater than 3, 2–3 mm long, 0.4–0.7 mm wide, 4–5-flowered, with florets loosely overlapping, with 1 bisexual floret. Glumes: lower glume 1–1.4 mm long; upper glume 1–2 mm long. Basal lemma lanceolate, with back straight, 1–2 mm long, minutely lobed or toothed, aristulate or awned, similar in firmness to the glumes, finely membranous, 3-nerved, smooth, glabrous; midnerve scaberulous. Palea 3/4–4/5 length of lemma body; body smooth or granular, glabrous; keels ciliolate or ciliate. Distal incomplete florets with narrower lemmas, with longer awns relative to lemma body.
