Characteristics

Annuals. Flowering culms 25–31 cm high. Leaves: basal sheaths pilose or glabrous; blade 0.6–2 mm wide, adaxially glabrous or sparsely pilose, abaxially pilose. Inflorescences: rachis pilose or glabrous; branches 1.5–2.5 cm long, far apart, spreading to reflexed. Spikelets spreading to reflexed, close together to far apart, obovate or oblong, with l:w less than 3, 4–5 mm long, 2–3 mm wide, 6–10-flowered, with (1–) 2–5 loosely overlapping bisexual florets. Glumes 2–3.5 mm long. Basal lemma ovate, with back straight, 3–4.5 mm long, entire, awned, decidedly firmer than the glumes, coriaceous, 3-nerved, scaberulous, glabrous; midnerve scabrous. Upper bisexual lemmas becoming longer and narrower acropetally, ovate to lanceolate, with longer awns; upper lemmas distinctly concave in profile on back (recurved). Palea c. 2/3 length of lemma body; body scaberulous, glabrous; keels ciliolate. Distal incomplete florets with narrower lemmas, with longer awns relative to lemma body.
