Annuals. Flowering culms 10–55 cm high. Leaves: basal sheaths glabrous or pilose; blade 0.7–4 mm wide, pilose or glabrous. Inflorescences: rachis pubescent or pilose; branches 0.8–2 cm long, close together to far apart, spreading to reflexed. Spikelets spreading to reflexed, usually overlapping or close together, obovate or obtriangular, with l:w 3 or less, 3–9 mm long, 2–3 mm wide, 4–9-flowered, with 1–4 loosely overlapping bisexual florets. Glumes: lower glume 1.5–4 mm long; upper glume 2–5 mm long. Upper bisexual lemmas becoming narrower acropetally, usually with longer awns and up to 7 nerves. Palea 1/2–2/3 length of lemma body; body smooth or scaberulous, pubescent; keels ciliate. Distal incomplete florets with narrower lemmas, with longer awns relative to lemma body.
