Characteristics

Annuals. Flowering culms 40–60 cm high. Leaves: basal sheaths pilose to hispid; blade 0.8–2.8 mm wide, adaxially pilose, abaxially pilose to hirsute. Inflorescences: rachis pilose; branches 1–3.5 cm long, far apart, spreading to reflexed (rarely appressed). Spikelets spreading to reflexed, overlapping or close together, linear or obovate, with l:w greater than 4, 7–11 mm long, 1.3–1.9 mm wide, 6–11-flowered, with 2–3 loosely overlapping bisexual florets. Glumes: lower glume 1.7–3.7 mm long; upper glume 2.8–4.4 mm long. Basal lemma lanceolate to ovate, straight or convex on the back in profile, 3.2–6 mm long, entire or notched, awned, similar in firmness to or decidedly firmer than the glumes, finely coriaceous, 3-nerved, minutely scaberulous or granular or smooth, glabrous; midnerve scaberulous. Upper bisexual lemmas becoming longer and narrower acropetally, lanceolate, with awns longer acropetally. Palea 2/3–3/4 length of lemma body; body scaberulous, glabrous; keels ciliolate. Distal incomplete florets with narrower lemmas, with longer awns relative to lemma body.
