Ephemerals. Flowering culms 12–40 cm high. Leaves: basal sheaths hispid; blade 1–4 mm wide, hispid (less densely on abaxial surface). Inflorescences: rachis hispid; branches 0.5–3.5 cm long, far apart, spreading. Spikelets spreading, usually far apart, oblong or ovate or obovate, with l:w less than 3, 5–11 mm long, 3–6 mm wide, 2–8-flowered, with 1–5 loosely overlapping bisexual florets. Glumes: lower glume 2.5–4 mm long; upper glume 3–4.5 mm long. Basal lemma ovate, convex in profile on back, 3–6 mm long, entire, muticous to awned, similar in firmness to the glumes, coriaceous, 5–7-nerved, smooth or scaberulous, glabrous; midnerve scaberulous or scabrous. Upper bisexual florets more tapered, with awns longer if present but shorter than lemmas. Palea ±half the length of lemma body; body smooth or scaberulous, glabrous or hispid; keels ciliolate or ciliate. Distal incomplete florets with narrower lemmas, with longer awns relative to lemma body.
