Annuals or perennials. Flowering culms 25–60 cm high. Leaves: basal sheaths glabrous; blade 2–4.5 mm wide, glabrous or adaxially pilose. Inflorescences: rachis glabrous or sparsely pilose; branches 2–4.5 cm long, touching to distant, erect to divaricate or appressed uniformly to axis at base. Spikelets spreading to reflexed, overlapping, linear or oblong, with l:w greater than 4, 6–10 (–12) mm long, 1–1.5 mm wide, 5–9-flowered, with 1–3 loosely imbricate bisexual florets. Glumes: lower glume 1.3–2.5 mm long; upper glume 2–3.1 mm long. Basal lemma oblong to lanceolate, with back straight, 3–4 mm long, entire or toothed or minutely lobed, aristulate to awned, similar in firmness to the glumes, membranous, 3-nerved, scaberulous, glabrous; midnerve scaberulous. Upper bisexual lemmas becoming narrower acropetally, lanceolate, with awns longer acropetally. Palea 1/2–2/3 length of lemma body; body scaberulous, glabrous; keels rigidly ciliolate. Distal incomplete florets with narrower lemmas and longer awns relative to lemma body.
