Characteristics

Shrub to 3 m., branching from the base; young shoots glabrous, older pale grey to grey-brown with numerous pale lenticels; very young unformed leaves with a few scurfy hairs.. Leaf-blades obovate to oblong-elliptic, 0.6–6 cm. long, 0.35–4 cm. wide, emarginate to broadly rounded at the apex, cuneate at the base, glabrous or very obscurely ciliate; petiole 0–7 mm. long.. Flowers in terminal and axillary divaricate cymes up to 5 × 6 cm.; peduncle and secondary branches up to ± 1 cm. long; pedicels 0.5–3 mm. long; all axes glabrous.. Calyx-lobes ovate to ovate-triangular, 2–2.5 mm. long, 1.8–2.5 mm. wide, rounded at apex, ciliolate, pubescent inside.. Corolla pale purple, drying brown with white base to the tube; tube cylindrical, 6.5–8(–10) mm. long; lobes 3.2–4 mm. long, 1.6–2.5 mm. wide, sparsely ciliate.. Filaments exserted, 2 mm. long; anthers 1.3 mm. long.. Style 5–6.5 mm. long including the 1.5–1.8 mm. long branches; stigmas ± capitate.. Fruits orange, depressed-globose, 4.5–6 mm. diameter; pyrenes segment-shaped, 4 mm. long, ± 3 mm. wide, one inner face with ear-shaped excavation, the other smooth without opening, outer face rugulose, reticulately pitted.
