Characteristics

Slender annuals caespitose, erect or geniculate or ascending. Culms 18–90 cm high; midculm internodes glabrous. Leaves non-auriculate or auriculate, with auricular setae; ligule 0.5–2.5 mm long, unfringed; blade flat, 3–10 cm long, 3–8 mm wide, abaxially glabrous. Panicles 10–20 cm long. Spikelets 2.5–4.5 mm long. Glumes equal or subequal, shorter than or ±equal to remainder of spikelet; lower glume 2.5–4.5 mm long, keeled or dorsally rounded, 3 or 5–7-nerved; upper glume 2.7–4.4 mm long, acute or obtuse, 3 or 7-nerved. Sterile florets: lemmas obtuse or truncate, muticous or minutely awned, smooth, puberulous to villous; lower lemma 1.3–2.3 mm long, bearded; upper lemma 2.2–4 mm long, with scales at base. Bisexual floret: lemma 2–3.7 mm long, 5-nerved, hairy over surface or only toward apex; stamens 2 or 3.
