Characteristics

Erect, tufted annuals, 60-100 cm. Leaf-sheath obviously nerved, keeled, submembranous, with sparse short hairs near base. Ligule c. 2 mm, deeply lacerate. Collar with hairs to 2.0 mm. Leaf-blade to 20 cm × 10 mm, flat, glabrous or with scattered long hairs, margins scaberulous. Culm 25-50-(80) cm, geniculate at base, internodes minutely scaberulous just below panicle and nodes. Panicle to 20 cm, narrow, open, with few, short, slender branches; pedicels filiform, long hairy. Spikelets 14-20 mm, light purplish green. Glumes unequal, < spikelets, membranous, margins ciliate; lower 2.5-3.5 mm, 5-nerved, elliptic, narrowed above to acute tip, upper c. 4.5 mm, 9-nerved, broadly ovate, tip mucronate. Lemmas of Ø florets similar in shape, indistinctly 5-7-nerved, coriaceous, scabrid, conspicuously awned to c. 9 mm and with a hinge-like appendage at base; lower < upper, with 3 basal tufts of hairs to 2 mm, upper with 2 less conspicuous tufts. Lemma of ☿ floret 6-7 mm, 7-nerved, elliptic, subcoriaceous, glabrous, awnless. Palea 5-6 mm, subhyaline, glabrous but finely ciliate-scabrid on keel below. Lodicules 1-1.5 mm, hair-tipped. Stamens 6; anthers c. 1.5 mm. Gynoecium: ovary 1 mm; stigma-styles 1.75 mm. Caryopsis 4-5 × 1-1.5 mm.
More
Annual, caespitose, erect or decumbent. Culms 30–120 cm high; mid-culm internodes glabrous. Leaves auriculate; ligule 1.5–3 mm long, unfringed; blade flat, 7–15 cm long, 5–15 mm wide, abaxially glabrous. Panicles to 15 (–40) cm long. Spikelets 10–25 mm long (including awns). Glumes unequal or rarely equal, c. 3/4 length of remainder of spikelet; lower glume 2–2.5 (–4) mm long, keeled, 5-nerved; upper glume 3.5–5 mm long, acuminate-cuspidate, 7–9-nerved. Sterile florets: lemmas stipitate, acuminate-cuspidate, mucronate or with straight scabrid awn to 12 mm long, scabrous at least in upper half; lower lemma non-rugose or transversely rugose in lower half, bearded at base; upper lemma body to 9 mm long, with base thickened and with scales, with tufts of hairs above base, non-rugose or rugose in lower half with 2 conspicuous bearded ridges. Bisexual floret: lemma 4–7 mm long, 7-nerved, glabrous except for tuft of hairs at tip; stamens 6 or rarely 4.
Leafy annual, 150-600 mm high. Leaf blade up to 200 x 5-15 mm, expanded, collar often dark; ligule a fringed or unfringed membrane. Inflorescence a sparingly branched narrow panicle. Spikelet 10-25(-35) mm long (including awns); glumes unequal, 1/3 as long as spikelet, 5-nerved. Florets 3; lower 2 florets sterile, lemmas similar, subglabrous, tufted hairs always at base, sides with 6-12 weak transverse ribs, apex long-awned, second sterile lemma without an ear-like appendage at base; uppermost floret bisexual, lemma firmer than glumes; anther 1.0-2.1 mm long. Flowering time July-Nov.
Leafy annual 150-600 mm high. Leaf blade to 200 x 5-15 mm, expanded, collar often dark. Spikelet 10-25(-35) mm long (including awns); glumes unequal, 1/3 as long as spikelet; sterile lemmas similar, sub-glabrous, always with tufted hairs at base, sides with 6-12 weak transverse ribs, apices awned; 2nd sterile lemma without an ear-like appendage at hinge-like joint at base; anther 1.0-2.1 mm long.
Tufted annual, up to 0.9 m tall. Leaf blades flat, broad, margins undulate; ligule a fringed membrane. Inflorescence a lax, verticillate panicle. Spikelets 10-25 mm long (including awns), green, sometimes tinged with purple, glumes shorter than spikelet, sterile lemmas smooth to corrugate, glabrous, tapering into a straight awn.
Annual to 90 cm. Leaves linear-lanceolate, margins undulate. Spikelets in a verticillate panicle, spikelets green, sometimes with purple, glumes shorter than spikelet, sterile lemmas smooth to corrugate, glabrous, tapering into a straight awn, the second slightly constricted at base.
