Perennial, shrub or dwarf shrub 300-1 000 mm high; rhizomes woody, branched; culm to 5 mm wide, woody. Leaf blade absent. Inflorescence usually contracted; pedicels erect to ascending. Spikelet (5.5-)6.0-7.5(-9.0) x 2-3 mm; glumes usually slightly shorter than spikelet; sterile lemmas similar, sides hairless, apices usually mucronate, 2nd sterile lemma with a pair of ear-like appendages at base; anther 2.7-4.0 mm long.
