Characteristics

Shrubs or trees, the branchlets 4-angled, glabrous to pubescent, often rimose. Leaves elliptic, ovate elliptic to obovate elliptic, often rounded, to 40 cm long, to 25 cm wide, rounded to acute at the apex, often abruptly acuminate, rounded or subauriculate at the base, the costa slender, prominulous, the lateral veins ca. 15, angular ascending, subcoriaceous, glabrous to densely short pilose above, more so beneath; petioles absent or to 1 cm long; stipules deciduous, oblong, 4.5-5.0 cm long, ca. 2 cm wide, rounded at the apex, truncate at the base. Info-rescences often exceeding the leaves, often epedunculate or seemingly with 3 peduncles arising from the apex of the twiglets, puberulent, the rachis twisted, plane, the branches opposite, well spaced, the flowers solitary or in few-flowered cymules. Flowers on slender pedicels, 2-5 mm long; hypanthium compressed oblong, ca. 1 mm long, pilose, the calycine cup ca. 0.8 mm long, scarious, eglan-dular within, the calycine lobes 5, expanded, compressed rotund, ca. 1 mm long; corolla white, the tube short, ca. 1 mm long, petaloid, venose, glabrous outside, densely short bearded at the point of filament attachment, the hairs forming a ball-like bulge, the lobes 5, oblong, ca. 1 mm long, rounded; stamens 5, exserted, the anthers oblong, ca. 2 mm long, the filaments to 2.5 mm long, glabrous distally; style to 2.5 mm long, the stigmas 2, fleshy but subplane, to 2 mm long, to 1 mm wide. Fruits oblong or oblong rotund, ca. 4.5 mm long, puberulent or glabrous, dark red.
