Tufted perennial from a short ascending rhizome.. Culms 34–60 cm. high, moderately robust, erect, branched at the lower nodes.. Leaf-blades folded, 11–31 cm. long, 4–6 mm. wide, scattered pilose on the upper surface, glabrous beneath, the margins scabrid only towards the subacute tip; ligule ± 0.5 mm. long, membranous, ciliate.. Inflorescence digitate, composed of 2–6 spikes, one often set below the main apical cluster; spikes 7.5–14 cm. long, slender, loosely ascending to widely spreading.. Spikelets 3–5-flowered, narrowly oblong, 6.1–7.4 mm. long, olive-grey; lower glume 1-nerved, lanceolate in profile, 2.5–3.1 mm. long, narrowly winged on the keel, acute; upper glume 3-nerved, the nerves close together forming a central thickened keel, narrowly oblong in profile, 3.6–4.1 mm. long, acute to obtuse; lemmas narrowly lanceolate in profile, 4.1–5 mm. long, a thin obscure additional nerve close to each side of the upper part of the central keel (best seen from inside the lemma), tip acute.. Grain elliptic, 1.7–2 mm. long, concave on the hilar side, finely striate.
