Terrestrial or epiphytic herbs ordinarily with strongly nerved, plicate, cauline leaves. Sepals subequal, free or the laterals somewhat connate at the base and forming a mentum. Petals subequal to the sepals, usually narrower. Lip adnate to the base of the column and usually enfolding it, subequal to or exceeding the sepals, usually gibbous-concave at the base and constricted above the base, the basal cavity containing two large, usually subovoid calluses. Column erect, foot-less; anther operculate, more or less incumbent or erect, bilocular; pollinia 8, subceraceous.
