Plants medium to large, forming cushions, dark green; terricolous or saxicolous. Stems 5-20 mm tall, branching above, radiculose below; in section round, central strand medium-sized, inner cortical cells large, in 5-6 rows, thin-walled, outer cortical cells smaller, in 2 rows, incrassate, reddish. Leaves crowded above, weakly contorted dry, widespreading wet; lingulate to oblong or elliptical, 3-6 mm long; apex short-acuminate, base oblong; margins papillose, weakly recurved for a short distance just above base, plane distally. Costa very short-excurrent, ventral superficial cells quadrate, papillose, similar to laminal cells, dorsal superficial cells linear, smooth below, sharply prorate distally; in section subround, guide cells 4, large, with several dorsal supplementary cells, ventral cells in 2 rows, slightly thickened, ventral surface cells smaller, papillose, dorsal stereid band strong, in 2-4 rows, dorsal surface cells not differentiated, smooth. Upper laminal cells hexagonal to subhexagonal, slightly thickened, papillae 2-6, large, C-or O-shaped; basal cells rectangular, fragile, vertical walls thin, end walls thickened, reddish; basal marginal cells linear, forming distinct border 2-4 cells wide. Autoicous. Perichaetia terminal, leaves smaller, oval-acute, costa excurrent as short awn. Seta erect, 6-10 mm long, red-brown; capsules cylindrical, 2.5-3.0 mm long, yellowish; exothecial cells rectangular to linear, strongly thickened; peristome fragile, frequently missing on empty capsules, teeth lanceolate, occasionally perforated, 125 µm long, granulate; operculum long-rostrate, 1.6 mm long; calyptra cylindrical-rostrate, 4.5-5.0 mm long, base with strongly differentiated fringe of enlarged, rectangular cells; spores discoid, 36-38 µm, yellowish, tetrad scar obvious, distal surface smooth, granulate or occasionally with rounded papillae.

Leaves oblong to elliptic, 4-6 mm, apices broadly acute to rounded, mucronate to cuspidate, margins recurved below mid-leaf; costa excurrent or subpercurrent, narrow; laminal cells 10-20 µm,; basal cells rectangular, 50-120 µm, smooth; basal marginal cells weakly differentiated below, in 4-8 rows, elongate, smooth. Specialized asexual reproduction absent. Seta 4-14 mm, yellow to yellowish brown. Capsule cylindric, 2-3 mm, smooth, constricted below mouth, yellowish brown, exothecial cells rectangular, 50-120 µm; peristome single, yellowish red to hyaline, 16 teeth, lanceolate, to 0.3 mm high, papillose, erect; operculum 1-1.5 mm. Plants medium to large, forming cushions. Stems 5-20 mm long. Leaves weakly contorted when dry, lingulate to oblong or elliptical; apex short-acuminate, base oblong; margins papillose; costa short-excurrent. Upper laminal cells hexagonal, papillae large; basal cells highly differentiated, fragile, rectangular, marginal cells linear, forming distinct borders. Capsule cylindrical, peristome absent; calyptra cylindrical-rostrate, entire to erose at base. Spores discoid, with tetrad scar, distal face warty. Easily recognised by the large, fringed calyptra, covering the erect capsule, and the discoid spores with tetrad scar.
