Characteristics

Perennials or rarely annuals. Flowering culms 7–45 cm high. Leaves densely pilose with simple hairs; blade persistent, flat or involute, finely acuminate. Panicles linear or often lanceolate to ovate, loosely contracted or spiciform, longer than wide, 3–9 cm long, 1–3 cm wide (including awns). Spikelets with 3–5 florets (2–3 (–4) bisexual). Glumes unequal, obtuse or acuminate to acute, (8–) 11–23-nerved, glabrous or pilose; lower glume 3.4–5.5 mm long; upper glume 4.7–8.5 (–13.6) mm long. Basal floret: lemma body 1.8–3.5 mm long, shorter than wide, cartilaginous to indurated, slightly ridged at base of lobes, with margins hyaline and glabrous, obscurely 9–11-nerved, with spreading hairs arising in lower third and much exceeding lobe bases; lemma lobes 7–11, longer than the body, with midlobe (2.7–) 7–11 (–15.4) mm long; palea distinctly exceeding lemma body, membranous, with keels ciliate for upper 1/2–3/4, with body sparsely pilose in upper 1/2–3/4 or rarely entirely glabrous or hairy, with flaps long-pilose. Anthers 0.3–0.4 mm long.
