Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae > Enneapogon

Characteristics

Slender perennials or, rarely, annuals. Flowering culms 10–40 cm high. Leaves sparsely pubescent to pilose on upper surface with glandular hairs; blade persistent, flat or involute, acuminate to acute. Panicles: terminal panicles ovate or oblong, contracted, capitate, usually similar in length and width, 1–2 (–4) cm long, 1–1.5 cm wide (including awns); reduced panicles or solitary cleistogenes usually present in sheath axils. Spikelets longer in upper part of panicle than in lower part, with 4–6 florets (1–2 bisexual). Glumes ±equal, 2.7–9.2 mm long, obtuse or truncate, 5–7 (–11)-nerved, scaberulous, pubescent or pilose (hairs simple and glandular). Basal lemma: body 1.6–2.8 mm long, as long as wide, membranous to cartilaginous, not ridged at base of lobes, with margins ciliate, prominently 9–13-nerved, with erect hairs arising in the lower 1/3–1/2 and exceeding the lobe bases; lemma lobes 9, distinctly longer than the body, with midlobe 3–10 mm long; palea slightly exceeding lemma body, membranous, with keels ciliate for usually the upper 1/3–2/3, with body and flaps pubescent (body rarely glabrous near apex and/or base). Anthers 0.5–0.6 mm long.
