Characteristics

Perennials. Flowering culms 28–62 cm high. Leaves minutely pubescent to pilose with simple and glandular hairs; blade persistent, flat, finely acuminate. Panicles loosely or tightly spiciform, longer than wide, (1.5–) 2.5–13 cm long, 1–2 cm wide (including awns). Spikelets with 5–6 florets (1 (–2) bisexual), with the second floret often male and almost as large as the first. Glumes ±equal or unequal, acute or obtuse, scaberulous, glandular pubescent to pilose or glabrous; lower glume 4–8 mm long, 9–14-nerved; upper glume 5.9–9.4 mm long, 7–14-nerved. Basal floret: lemma body 2.9–4.2 mm long, as long as wide, cartilaginous to indurated, not ridged at base of lobes, with margins densely ciliate, usually obscurely 9–11-nerved, with spreading hairs arising near base and not reaching to exceeding lobe bases; lemma lobes 9, longer than body, with midlobe 3.5–9 mm long; palea distinctly exceeding lemma body, cartilaginous, with keels entirely long-ciliate or glabrous near base, with body glabrous or scaberulous-pubescent near base and/or apex, with flaps glabrous or almost so. Anthers 1–1.3 mm long.
