Characteristics

Perennials. Flowering culms 13–36 cm high. Leaves glabrous or pubescent to pilose with simple or glandular hairs; blade persistent, flat, finely acuminate. Panicles spiciform, longer than wide, 1.5–6.5 cm long, c. 1 cm wide (including awns). Spikelets with 4–5 florets (1 bisexual), with second floret much smaller than first and sterile. Glumes ±equal, 2.5–5.4 mm long, obtuse or truncate, 4–9-nerved, sparsely pubescent (hairs glandular). Basal floret: lemma body 2–3.5 mm long, longer than wide, cartilaginous to indurated, slightly ridged at base of lobes, with margins glabrous or sparsely ciliolate, obscurely or slightly prominently 9-nerved, with spreading hairs arising in the lower 1/4–1/3 and usually not exceeding the lobe bases; lemma lobes 9, usually longer than (or occasionally shorter than) the body, with midlobe 2–4 (–5.2) mm long; palea about equal to lemma body, cartilaginous, with keels ciliolate or scaberulous for most of the length or hairless near base, with body and flaps glabrous. Anthers 0.4–0.5 mm long.
