Perennials or, rarely, annuals. Flowering culms 13.5–66 cm high. Leaves pubescent to pilose with simple and glandular hairs, or glabrous; blade persistent, involute or flat, finely acuminate or acute. Panicles ovate or elliptic or globoid, contracted, capitate, usually similar in length and width, 0.5–1.8 (–4.6) cm long, 0.5–1.5 cm wide (including awns). Spikelets with 3–6 florets (1 (–2) bisexual). Glumes ±equal, 2–5 mm long, obtuse to truncate, 3–12-nerved, smooth, sparsely pilose (hairs simple) or pubescent (hairs glandular) or glabrous. Basal lemma: body 1.6–4.3 mm long, longer than wide, membranous to cartilaginous, not ridged or slightly ridged at base of lobes, with margins ciliate, prominently 9–11-nerved, with stiffly erect hairs arising in the lower 1/4–2/3 and usually not reaching the lobe bases; lemma lobes 9–12, lobes usually shorter than or ±equal to body, with midlobe 1–2.5 (–6.2) mm long; palea distinctly exceeding the lemma body, membranous, with keels ciliolate or ciliate for the upper 1/2–2/3, with body pilose to pubescent (rarely glabrous near apex and/ or base), with flaps pilose. Anthers 0.5–0.7 mm long.
