Characteristics

Perennials. Flowering culms glabrous, 30–88 cm high. Leaves pubescent or hirsute with simple and/or glandular hairs; blade persistent, usually flat or involute, finely acuminate. Panicles linear or pyramidal to cone-shaped, contracted, spiciform, longer than wide, (3–) 5–8 (–13) cm long, 1–2.5 (–4) cm wide (including awns). Spikelets with (3–) 4–5 florets (1 (–2) bisexual). Glumes unequal, obtuse or truncate, (5–) 7–9 (–11)-nerved, scabrous, pubescent to pilose with hairs mostly simple (sometimes glandular); lower glume 2.5 mm long; upper glume 3.1–6.3 mm long. Basal floret: lemma body 1.6–3.4 mm long, as long as wide, cartilaginous, not ridged at base of lobes, with margins ciliate, faintly nerved, with erect hairs arising in the lower 1/2–2/3 and not reaching the lobe bases; lemma lobes 9, longer than body, with midlobe 3–6 (–9.5) mm long; palea slightly exceeding lemma body, membranous, with keels scaberulous to ciliate for upper 1/2–3/4, with body pubescent all over, with flaps pubescent to hirsute or partly glabrous. Anthers 1.2–1.4 mm long.
