Characteristics

Annuals or perennials. Flowering culms 3–48 cm high. Leaves pubescent to pilose with simple hairs; blade persistent, involute or convolute, acuminate or acute. Panicles linear or lanceolate to elliptic, contracted, spiciform, longer than wide, (1.5–) 4–9 (–11.7) cm long, 1–2 cm wide (including awns). Spikelets with (4–) 5–6 florets (1 bisexual). Glumes ±equal to unequal, 4–9 mm long, acuminate to acute, 5–13-nerved, pubescent (with long simple, and short glandular, hairs). Basal floret: lemma body 2–3 (–4.2) mm long, as long as wide, cartilaginous to indurated, not ridged at base of lobes, with margins hyaline to membranous and glabrous to sparsely ciliate, 9-nerved with obscure or slightly prominent nerves, with erect hairs arising in lower half and much exceeding lobe bases; lemma lobes 9, longer than body, with midlobe (2–) 4–7 (–11.6) mm long; palea shorter than or as long as body, membranous, with keels ciliolate in the upper 1/2–2/3 with hairs sometimes longer towards base, with body pubescent in lower 1/3–1/2 and glabrous above or sometimes entirely glabrous, with flaps sparsely hairy. Anthers 0.5–0.6 mm long.
