Characteristics

Annuals or perennials. Flowering culms glabrous, 6–75 cm high. Leaves glabrous or sparsely pubescent to pilose with simple and glandular hairs; blade persistent, usually flat, finely acuminate. Panicles linear or lanceolate to oblong, contracted, spiciform, longer than wide, (1.5–) 3–10.8 cm long, 1–1.5 cm wide (including awns). Spikelets with 3–5 florets (1 bisexual). Glumes ±equal or unequal, acuminate to acute or obtuse to truncate, (5–) 7–11 (–13)-nerved, scaberulous, pubescent and pilose (hairs simple and glandular); lower glume 2.4–4 mm long; upper glume 3.8–4.7 (–8.2) mm long. Basal floret: lemma body 1.6–2.6 mm long, as long as wide, cartilaginous to indurated, not ridged at base of lobes, with margins glabrous to sparsely ciliolate, usually obscurely 9-nerved, with erect hairs arising in the lower third and not exceeding (rarely some hairs exceeding) the lobe bases; lemma lobes 9, usually longer than body (rarely shorter), with midlobe (1.8–) 4–6 (–7.4) mm long; palea slightly exceeding lemma body, membranous, with keels scaberulous to ciliate in the upper 1/2–2/3, with body pubescent in the lower 1/2–2/3, with flaps pilose or partly glabrous. Anthers 0.6 mm long.
